Beauty A Retelling of the Story of Beauty & the Beast by Robin McKinley is a young adult modern fantasy book. I believe this book met the criteria for the genre very well. First, the magical world is consistent throughout the book. Beauty’s presence seemed to cause things to happen, like doors opening, candles lighting, and rooms appearing. Later in the book, we discover the Beast is actually making these things happen. Continue reading “Beauty A Retelling of the Story of Beauty & the Beast”
Charlotte’s Web
Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White is a children’s modern fantasy book. I believe this book met the criteria for the genre very well. First, the magical world is consistent throughout the book. Defending Redwall
Redwall by Brian Jacques is a children’s Modern Fantasy book. I believe this book met the criteria for the genre very well. First, the animal world is consistent throughout the book. The animals talk and wear clothes. The time period is the olden days, like the middle ages or the Shakespearean period. The good guys, like Mathias, always tried to do good things like Martin the Warrior, who he idolized. The bad guys, like Cluney the Scourge, uses whatever means necessary to get what he wants. Father Abbot, who is old and wise, is a valuable father figure and mentor to young Mathias. Continue reading “Defending Redwall”
Where the Red Fern Grows
The best book I read this semester was Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls. The Genre of this book is Contemporary Realistic Fiction. It is fiction because the story is not about a real person, but it could have been. It takes place in the past. It is about the love of a boy, Billy, and his two dogs, Dan and Ann. The nine characteristics required for evaluating Contemporary Realistic Fiction are: Continue reading “Where the Red Fern Grows”
I believe in Christ
When our family read the scripture from 3 Nephi 11, I could picture Christ descending from above in a pillar of light. God spoke to the people 3 times before the Nephite people understood His words. “Behold my beloved son, in whom I am well pleased, in whom I have glorified my name – hear ye him.” It was easy for me to picture because my favorite animated video is Christ coming to America. Watching the video, I feel so much love for my Savior that I feel warm inside and tears come to my eyes. Continue reading “I believe in Christ”

Getting Back in the Saddle
All my life I’ve heard the tired old cliché, “When you fall off a horse you have to get back in the saddle.” This never meant anything to me until I was thrown from a horse. Continue reading “Getting Back in the Saddle”
Dear Lily
Dear Lily,
When I came home from work, I saw you standing in front of my house. I ran to you, but you tried to crawl under a palette to hide. You were fast, but I was faster. You made yowling noises as I pulled you from the palette. I held you so you couldn’t get away. I named you Lily because you are white and delicate. Whenever I hold you, I remember the movie Fivel Goes West. When Cat R was being mauled by a woman, she called him “pussy poo”. I gave you that nickname and I have called you “pussy poo“ ever since. Continue reading “Dear Lily”
